Prescott Russell Amateur Radio Emergency Service Group
The Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) is a volunteer organization of Amateur
Radio Operators. Since 1935, ARES has provided radio communica- tions in North America in times of need. Amateur
Radio is a unique experi- mental hobby for personal use, which serves to join people, and yet has the power to
help save lives and property. In these modern times of cellular phones and the Internet, we take instant communications
for granted. During times of emergency, these communication infrastructures can become overloaded and impede normal
communications capability.
Apart from the hobby aspect, the Prescott-Russell ARES Group is an important component of the regional emergency
plan. Amateur radio operators played an important role during the 1998 Ice Storm and were on standby for Y2K and
the 2003 major power outage. For more information, call Michael Hickey at (613) 679-4474.
