We started off posting some of Kevin Annett's articles about 2 years ago. He took on a very heavy topic when he delved into the issue of Indian Residential Schools aka canada's concentration camps for Indigenous children. We wanted our readers to see what Annett was doing as we watched with some misgivings.
First of all, it always sends up our red flags when some settler/colonist rushes in to "save" us, no matter how well intentioned they appear. Annett does have his supporters but we have never met either him or them in person or even on the phone. Annett always dodged our overtures over the past 12 years to find out more about him.
As his articles became increasingly provocative, our concerns grew. Many of our friends and allies were extremely suspicious of his motives and activities. When some Indigenous women wrote to us from the West, telling us of their personal experiences, we had to take their stories into consideration. Until we had a way to verify their reports, we could not publish their comments but always continued to keep them in mind.
Finally, it became apparent that Annett's big EGO was getting way out of hand. As an ordained minister and doctor of divinity of one of the very churches who built and administered the residential schools, Annett could play an important role in this most dark and heavy issue that continues to cause great pain and shame amongst Indigenous people. However, as typical of the white male mentality, he has made this about him. Is Kev trying to be a Christian martyr or what??
"Or what?" is a good question. Kev displays a number of features that suggest he is agent provocateur himself. Recently, he posted articles claiming that he had now received death threats. This is an old strategy/dirty trick to enhance flagging credibility and make an individual more important. Another thing that Kev does that is also very disrespectful, arrogant and self aggrandizing is this:
We have repeatedly asked Annett et al to take us off their mailing list. We don't have to give a reason. As with any list, we get on lists and we get off. We have a right to not receive unwanted emails in our mailbox. We already wrote and told Annett et al that we will no longer read their postings so what is the point in continuing to send them to us? It is simply harrassment. Kev would no doubt, love the attention if we make a big deal out of it.
An old saying comes to mind and you know we like those old sayings: Give them enough rope and they'll hang themselves.
